Jiu Jitsu & Muay Thai Kids
Parent information & Expectations
At Stance Jiu Jitsu, our aim is to give every child the opportunity to enjoy Jiu Jitsu, build confidence, develop discipline and learn valuable skills in a safe, supportive and positive environment.
To help us provide the best possible experience for all our students, we have a few expectations for children, parents and guardians. These guidelines allow our coaches to focus on teaching while ensuring that every child can train safely and get the most from their time at Stance..
-
We ask all parents to plan ahead and ensure their child arrives on time and ready to train.
For Kids Jiu Jitsu classes, there is a strict 5-minute lateness allowance.
Students may arrive up to 5 minutes after the scheduled class start time.
After 5 minutes, students will not be permitted to join the class.
There are no exceptions to this policy.
Please allow enough time for parking, changing and getting your child ready before the class begins.
Children should wait off the mats until their coach invites them to begin.
This policy is in place for the safety and benefit of all students. Once a class is underway, allowing late arrivals onto the mats can disrupt the session and create unnecessary safety concerns.
We appreciate parents making punctuality a priority and helping us keep Kids Jiu Jitsu classes running smoothly.
-
Parents and guardians play an important role in helping us maintain a safe and comfortable environment for everyone.
Parents of children who may need assistance should remain at the academy for the duration of the class.
Children must not leave the academy unattended.
Please collect your child promptly when their class finishes.
Parents and spectators should remain off the mats during training unless invited by a coach.
Please allow our coaches to manage the class without interruption.
Prams, Pushchairs & ScootersDue to the limited space available inside the academy, prams, pushchairs, buggies and all types of scooters must be left outside the academy.
Unfortunately, we are unable to store these items inside the academy, as they take up valuable space and can obstruct walkways and training areas.
We appreciate your cooperation in keeping the academy clear, accessible and safe for everyone.
If there is anything we should know that may affect your child’s participation or wellbeing, please speak to a member of the coaching team.
-
From startups to seasoned brands, we partner with people who care about doing things right—and doing them well.
-
All students should arrive ready to train in the correct clothing and equipment.
Gi Classes
Children should have:
A clean Gi.
Their current belt.
A suitable rash guard or T-shirt underneath their Gi where required.
Any additional equipment requested by the coaching team.
Please make sure your child’s Gi and belt are washed after every training session. Wearing an unwashed Gi across multiple sessions can create hygiene risks for your child and their training partners.
We also recommend clearly writing your child’s name on their belt and labelling their equipment to prevent items being mixed up.
No-Gi Classes
For No-Gi sessions, children should wear appropriate training clothing such as:
A rash guard or suitable training top.
Grappling shorts or appropriate sportswear.
Any additional equipment requested by the coaching team.
-
Good hygiene is particularly important in Jiu Jitsu because students train in close physical contact with one another.
Please make sure your child:
Arrives clean and ready to train.
Has clean hands and feet.
Keeps fingernails and toenails short and trimmed.
Does not wear jewellery, watches or other items that could cause injury.
Brings a clearly labelled water bottle.
Does not bring food or drinks onto the mats.
Does not wear outdoor shoes on the training mats.
Has suitable footwear for moving around the academy when not on the mats.
If your child is unwell, has a fever, contagious illness, skin infection or any condition that could potentially affect other students, please keep them away from training until it is appropriate for them to return.
-
Every child develops differently, and Jiu Jitsu is a long-term journey.
Progression is based on more than simply how long a student has been attending classes. Our coaches consider factors such as:
Consistency and attendance.
Technical development.
Understanding of Jiu Jitsu.
Ability to apply techniques safely.
Attitude and effort.
Respect towards coaches and training partners.
Maturity and overall development.
Stripes and belt promotions are awarded at the discretion of the coaching team.
We ask parents not to compare their child’s progression with other students. Each child has their own strengths, challenges and pace of development.
Our goal is to help every student become a better version of themselves both on and off the mats.
-
Respect is a fundamental part of Jiu Jitsu.
Students are expected to:
Listen to and respect their coaches.
Treat their training partners appropriately.
Follow instructions.
Keep their hands to themselves unless instructed otherwise.
Avoid unnecessary shouting or disruptive behaviour.
Avoid play fighting outside of the appropriate training environment.
Look after the academy and its equipment.
Train safely and responsibly.

Parents are asked not to coach their children from the side of the mats.
Although the intention is always positive, additional instructions from parents can distract children and sometimes conflict with what the coach is teaching.
If you have a question or concern about your child’s training, please speak with a coach before or after the session rather than during the class.
Practising At Home
We encourage children to be enthusiastic about Jiu Jitsu and to practise what they learn.
However, please ensure that anything practised at home is age-appropriate and safe.
Children should not practise submissions, takedowns or other potentially dangerous techniques on siblings, friends or other children without suitable supervision.
If you are unsure whether a technique is appropriate for your child’s level, please speak to one of our coaches.
Parents During Class
Photos & Videos
To protect the privacy of our students and families, parents and visitors should not take photographs or record videos during classes unless permission has been given.
From time to time, Stance Jiu Jitsu may take photographs or videos for academy content, social media or promotional purposes.
Where applicable, parents will be informed in advance and given the opportunity to raise any concerns or opt out in accordance with our photography and consent procedures.
Lost Property
Please label your child’s Gi, belt, water bottle and other personal belongings wherever possible.
If your child leaves something behind, please speak to a member of the Stance team as soon as possible.
We recommend checking that your child has collected all of their belongings before leaving after every session.
Holidays, Closures & Timetable Changes
There may be occasions when the academy is closed or the timetable needs to change due to holidays, events, competitions, maintenance or other circumstances.
We will communicate planned closures and significant timetable changes to parents in advance wherever possible.
Please make sure your contact details are up to date and check the usual Stance Jiu Jitsu communication channels for announcements.
Communication & Supporting Your Child
We want to work closely with parents to help every child get the most from their Jiu Jitsu experience.
Please let us know about anything that may help our coaches better support your child. This may include:
Additional learning needs.
Behavioural considerations.
Relevant medical information.
Injuries or physical limitations.
Anything else that may affect their participation.
If you have a concern about your child’s experience, please raise it with a coach before or after class rather than during the session.
For absences, general questions or other matters, please contact Stance through [insert preferred contact method].
Our Commitment
Our aim is to create a safe, structured and positive environment where children can learn Jiu Jitsu, challenge themselves, build confidence and enjoy being part of the Stance community.
By following these expectations, parents and students help us maintain an academy where everyone can train, learn and progress together.
Thank you for being part of Stance Jiu Jitsu.
