More Than a Sports Class.
A Life Skill.
Every parent in Woolwich knows the afternoon struggle. School finishes, the homework battle kicks off, the screen time creeps in and football gets rained off again. The swimming class has a twelve week waiting list and rugby only runs in term time.
At Stance Jiu Jitsu Academy on Woolwich High Street, we have built something different. An after school programme that gives your child the one thing football, swimming and rugby classes cannot offer on their own: the ability to stay calm, think clearly and back themselves when it counts.
Our kids classes run Monday to Saturday in SE18, split by age group, taught by DBS checked coaches who genuinely care about the children they work with. Your child will leave every session tired, happy and a little bit more confident than when they walked in
Why Martial Arts Beats the Usual After School Options
Parents across SE18 are making the switch from football, swimming and rugby. Here is what they tell us.
Indoor and all weather, runs six days a week all year
No waiting list, book a free trial this week
Small structured classes with individual attention
Teaches real self defence, confidence and focus
Clear belt progression so kids see their own growth
Runs through school holidays too
Benefits
Focus and Discipline Martial arts trains the brain as hard as the body. Children learn to concentrate, follow instructions and stay calm under pressure in a way classroom sports simply cannot replicate.
Real Fitness Full body conditioning every session. Strength, flexibility, coordination and stamina, all built without a treadmill in sight.
Self Defence Practical skills that give children genuine confidence. Not the kind that comes from a certificate, the kind that comes from actually knowing what to do.
Respect and Teamwork Every class starts and ends with respect. Kids learn to work with training partners, support each other and handle winning and losing properly.
Less Screen Time Two or three sessions a week gives your child a structured, active alternative to phones and gaming. The best part is they actually want to go.

FAQs
My child has never done martial arts. Is that okay?
1
Absolutely. Every child at Stance starts as a complete beginner. Our kids classes are structured so that new starters train alongside other beginners rather than experienced students. Your child will never be thrown in at the deep end. That is a promise we keep every single week.
Is martial arts better than football or swimming classes for my child?
2
It depends what you are looking for. Martial arts is year round, all weather and gives your child individual attention rather than being one of twenty on a pitch. It also builds self defence skills and mental resilience that football and swimming simply do not cover. Many families in SE18, Greenwich and Plumstead use it alongside other sports. Others use it as a replacement when waiting lists get too long.
What age can my child start?
3
We welcome children from age four. Our youngest group works through games and movement drills to introduce martial arts in a playful, age appropriate way. Classes become progressively more technical as children move into the seven to eleven and eleven to fifteen groups.
Are your coaches DBS checked?
4
Yes. Every coach working with children at Stance Jiu Jitsu Academy holds a current Enhanced DBS check and is trained in child safeguarding. Your child's safety is the one thing we never compromise on.
