The Back-to-School Activity That Builds Champions

Why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the Right Choice for Your Kids

Stance Jiu Jitsu Academy runs a proper kids' Brazilian Jiu Jitsu programme in Woolwich, SE18, structured around three age groups so every child trains with kids their own size and stage of development. From their first roll to their first stripe, we build children up, not just physically, but in how they carry themselves at school, at home and everywhere in between

School terms bring a lot for kids to manage.

new routines, new pressures, new social dynamics.

Kids Jiu Jitsu gives them somewhere steady to put that energy. Unlike seasonal sports like football or rugby, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training runs all year round, so the structure and support never stop.

On the mats, children learn that progress comes from showing up and trying, not from being the biggest or the loudest. That lesson tends to follow them home. Parents across Woolwich and South East London regularly tell us their kids are calmer, more focused, and quicker to bounce back from a tough day at school after a few months of training.

A few things every parent can expect from our Woolwich Jiu Jitsu classes:

  • A calm, structured class every session, not just games and running about

  • Instructors experienced specifically in coaching children

  • A clear belt and stripe system so kids can see their own progress

  • A genuine anti-bullying grounding, taught through respect rather than aggression

  • A community of other local South East London families going through the same thing

Our Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Programmes in Woolwich

Little Champions Jiu Jitsu — Ages 4 to 6

This is where it all starts. Classes at this age are short, playful and built around movement, listening and following instructions, the foundations every child needs before the technical side of Jiu Jitsu comes in.

Children this age get:

  • Games and drills that build coordination, balance and body awareness

  • Simple, age-appropriate self-defence concepts

  • Practice sharing the mat, taking turns and listening to a coach

  • A first taste of structure and routine, delivered through fun

Most parents are amazed at how quickly a fidgety four-year-old learns to sit still and pay attention, on the mats and off them.

Junior Grapplers Jiu Jitsu — Ages 7 to 10

By this age, kids are ready for more structure and a bit more challenge. Classes introduce proper Brazilian Jiu Jitsu technique alongside the discipline to go with it.

Children this age get:

  • Real Jiu Jitsu fundamentals, taught step by step

  • Growing confidence through mastering new skills

  • Practical, age-appropriate answers to bullying, standing tall without needing to fight

  • A stripe and belt path that keeps them motivated to keep coming back

This is often the age where we see the biggest shift in how a child carries themselves, at school, with friends, and at home.

Teens Jiu Jitsu Programme — Ages 11 to 15

Preteens and teenagers are dealing with a lot: changing friendships, more academic pressure, and the general chaos of growing up. Jiu Jitsu gives them somewhere to put all of it, and a peer group that's working through the same things they are.

Children this age get:

  • Full technical Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training, gi and no-gi

  • A physical, healthy outlet for stress

  • Real discipline and emotional control under pressure

  • The option to explore competition, with no pressure to do so

Many of our teens started with us as Little Champions.

What Happens in Your Child's First Jiu Jitsu Class

There's no pressure, and nobody expects a new student to know anything on day one. Your child will meet their coach, get shown the basics of how a class runs, and be encouraged to join in at their own pace. Most kids leave their first session already looking forward to the next one.

A Safe, Supportive Environment for Kids Jiu Jitsu

  • All instructors are experienced in coaching children specifically, not just adults

  • Classes are grouped by age so kids train with appropriately matched partners

  • Mats and equipment are kept clean and well maintained

  • A clear, structured curriculum means steady, safe progress rather than rushing anyone

FAQs

What age can my child start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

1

Our youngest group welcomes children from age 4. If you're not sure which group suits your child, give us a call and we'll point you the right way.

Does my child need any experience or equipment?

2

No. Just comfortable clothes for the trial class. If they carry on with us, we'll help you sort a gi.

Is Jiu Jitsu safe for kids?

3

Yes. Classes are age grouped, closely supervised, and built around controlled, progressive technique rather than full contact sparring.

What if my child is shy or nervous?

4

Very common, and usually gone within a couple of sessions. Our coaches are used to bringing quieter kids out of their shell gently, never by putting them on the spot.
